Assemblyman Lavine Is Leader in Battle to End Investments in Iran
Assemblyman Lavine was honored to be called upon to lead the debate that resulted in the passage of the Iran Divestment Act of 2012. The Act authorizes state and local governments to prohibit contracts with companies that conduct substantial business or invest in Iran’s energy industry. The legislation will act as an effective sanction against Iran’s current tyrannical government.
“An Iranian nuclear weapon is a grave threat against the United States and Israel,” said Lavine. “This legislation delivers a strong message to companies who would otherwise conduct business with Iran’s despotic regime.”
State legislation against foreign countries is not unprecedented. New York State led the fight against apartheid in South Africa by passing divestment legislation.
